Inspiration is, perhaps, the most important element in writing after the skill of writing itself. For example, the picture above inspires me to write a peaceful novel where the main theme is in fact peace. Whereas say a picture of a dark mountain might inspire fear. Inspiration is the actual drive that makes us be writers. It may come from a plethora of various places. Some find the solace in music, some in movies, others in good reads or when they see a grandiose scene in the natural world and even in video games. I believe that I shall release each section of inspiration as separate blog posts as to achieve a lovely serial effect. Before I go into all these different areas of where inspiration comes from I would like to harp a bit on the "solace" of inspiration.
Solace is defined as "Comfort or consolation in a time of distress". We as word artists are never happy nor are we satisfied. Once a problem in our lives have been mended we then see the proverbial cow in the roooom. That is to say we see a magnificent lie or flaw that encompasses our culture or world and we then try to reveal it through writing. Oddly, people (especially those governments) do not like when their flaws are exposed blatantly. So we write our emotions subtly and sprinkle them with writers seasonings. I.E. allegory, metaphor, allusion etc. Since then writers see this cow and nothing is being done about it (normally), they find solace in inspiration. For inspiration, gives the slightest amount of hope. Inspiration conveys the feeling of understanding to the broken writer. This is the very emotion that writers cling to because as Emerson says "Every man supposes himself not to be fully understood or appreciated." So when the feeling of finally being understood emerges, it causes the dilapidated author to rejoice.
What do you think? What is the "Plight" of writers?
